Make Your Post Hypnotic Suggestion Effective
An effective post hypnotic suggestion is what will make your hypnosis session most productive. You should make sure that your hypnotherapist works with you to develop any post hypnotic suggestion that you receive. After all, you don’t want to go to a hypnotist who will simply read a cookie cutter script with pre-written suggestions.
While a number of post hypnotic suggestions work for everyone, you are an individual. There are certain thoughts that arise in your mind that are different than what another person thinks. This is natural because you have a unique history. How your parents treated you is a little different than how your parents treated your brothers or sisters. And, how your neighbors treated their children is even more different than how you were treated.
You probably work at a different job than your neighbor. And you have a different boss and different coworkers. Your genetics, the people, books, movies, events and home environment that influenced you in the past all work to make you unique.
So, it’s important that you work with a hypnotist who is willing to hear your “story” about the problem you are seeking help with. Your hypnosis session will be most effective if you can work together to craft a couple of sentences that precisely express the new thoughts you, as an individual, should begin thinking after your session. These unique sentences should form part of the post hypnotic suggestion you receive during your session.
Developing the Right Post Hypnotic Suggestion
Now, let’s get right to the task of finding just the right sentences. We’ll take weight loss as our example problem.
Think about three important questions:
- When do I eat?
- Where do I eat?
- Why do I eat?
While these questions may seem simple, they are very revealing. For example, suppose you eat when you feel lonely. Or suppose you eat when you become frustrated with a problem you are working on.
Or, suppose you eat a cream filled doughnut on the way home from work. Maybe you buy a sugary snack at the store where you get your coffee when you take a break. Perhaps you eat several bagels with cream cheese at business meetings.
And, maybe you eat as a reward for having solved a problem. Or, you could eat as a way of relaxing.
You see, when, where, and why you eat are important. Unless you identify your specific weaknesses when it comes to unhealthy food, you can address only generic thoughts.
So, let’s formulate a couple of sentences from the above answers that can be used in a post hypnotic suggestion.
Prepare an alternative to eating when you become frustrated with a current project. A sentence might be: “When I become frustrated with a problem I will take five minutes to close my eyes, relax and clear my mind so I can solve the problem with a clear mind.”
To avoid eating on the way home from work, construct another sentence, like “Before I leave work I will drink a full glass of water to help fill my stomach so I will feel full on my trip home.”
Now you have some powerful thoughts to express that will directly help you when you receive your post hypnotic suggestion.
